“BLP bags KPMG tax head in Costa Rica”

Costa Rica's BLP Abogados has hired Alonso Arroyo as partner and head of its tax practice.

Arroyo, 40, took up his role on 12 October after nine years as a partner at KPMG's Costa Rica office, where he headed the tax and legal practice.

"My move from an audit firm to a law firm is mainly because audit firms' future is destined to be audit, period," he says. "In the past years we have seen increased restrictions on services that can be provided to clients within the context of a 'Big Four' firm, not only with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act but with more and more SEC regulations."

He has served on the board of directors of the Costa Rican-American Chamber of Commerce since 2006, and has also acted as a government adviser to the ministries of finance, natural resources and mines, and national planning.

LATINLAWYER named him among the top tax lawyers in Latin America in 2003.

Arroyo is one of several of BLP's senior staff to come from KPMG. His arrival brings BLP Abogados' partner count to 10. The LATINLAWYER 250 describes BLP as "one of Costa Rica's stand-out law firms", with one client calling it the country's "best new corporate law firm".
