BLP Abogados announced today that David Gutiérrez, one of its two Founding Partners, has been invited to join the Chairman’s International Advisory Council of the Americas’ Society and the Council of the Americas.

Assa Insurance company became the 5th company to enter the Insurance record of Costa Rica, after receiving approval of the country's insurance superintendency (Sugese) this past April 13th. The company, owned by Grupo Assa of Panama, has license to sell general and personal insurance policies, being the first insurance private company to have this license.

April 17th 2010 - “The largest wind farm in the country opened in Bagaces"

The largest wind farm installed in Costa Rica opened on April 17th, 2010, with a capacity to supply an estimated 70 000 households per year. The Plata Eolica Guanacaste (PEG), located in Bagaces, Guanacaste, belongs to a consortium comprised by three companies: GDF SUEZ Energy Central America, subsidiary of the Franco Belgian group GDF SUEZ ,Juwi, the German renewable energy developer, and Proyectos y Construcciones BC y Asociados S.A., a Costa Rican construction company.

The progress report issued by the OECD on April 2 de 2009, following the G20 London Summit, surprisingly included Costa Rica as one of the jurisdictions that has not committed to implement the internationally agreed tax standard. The standard requires exchange of information on request in all tax matters for the administration and enforcement of domestic tax law without regard to bank secrecy.

The Costa Rican Insurance Superintendent (SUGESE) authorized Grupo Assa, a Panamanian insurance conglomerate, to set up an insurance company that will operate both in property and casualty (P&C) lines and life and health lines.

October 2009 - “4th Iberoamerican Economic Regulation Convention to be held in San José, Costa Rica”

After three successful Conventions were held in the following cities: Santiago, Chile (2005), Montevideo, Uruguay (2006) and Sao Paulo, Brazil (2008), the Iberoamerican Association of Regulatory Studies (ASIER), along with BLP Abogados, decided to organize the 4th Iberoamerican Regulatory Studies Convention which will be held on November 24th and 25th of 2009, this time, in San José, Costa Rica.

BLP Abogados has represented ITS Infocomunicación in a private equity deal in Costa Rica. ITS has initially received USD10 million from Aureos Capital Ltd., the British private equity firm, through its ALAF or latin american fund. The deal was structured as a debt and equity investment in this regional company, headquartered in San José, Costa Rica.

BLP Abogados scored a major victory for one of its clients when it convinced the Public Registry to record the assignment of concessions in Papagayo without the assignee’s signature in the notarial deed of the assignment agreement.

This is the result of the Environmental Performance Study conducted by scientists from the Universities of Columbia and Yale in 149 countries. The Study analyzed environmental health, water and air quality, biodiversity, natural resources and climate change.

March 2009 - “Notification Act in force”

This innovative Act comprises important and innovative topics such as provisions to ensure handicapped are able to understand the documents served to them and the possibility of serving parties through electronic and computer devices. Additionally, some notification methods foreseen by the previous law have been further regulated. Hence, it is still possible to give notice to parties by means of a Notary Public, through electronic devices such as fax among others.

December 2008 - “School salary Promotion Law for the Private Sector”

The School salary Promotion Law was enacted last December. According to the law, an employer could withhold between 4.16% to 8.33% of the employee’s salary as per his request. BLP has given several seminars regarding this matter.
